Seven artists from Leipzig

German photographic artist Joachim Brohm nominated seven students from his class to put together an exhibition that would demonstrate their range of perspectives and artistic strategies. The idea was to both examine the city and demonstrate the potential embodied by photography today, as reflected by young artists on their way to carving out their own niche in this field.

The Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB Leipzig) is unique in Germany thanks to its four areas of specialisation: painting, new media art, book design and photography. Founded in 1764, photography was added to the Academy’s teaching programme back in 1893.

Six professors have been teaching aspects of artistic photography at the Academy since the 1990s. In many fields, former students from Leipzig have since become leading voices in discourse on artistic photography in teaching and artistic practice.

The Class for Photography and Media led by Professor Joachim Brohm

The Class is dedicated to the city in all its complexities – both as a space for artistic projection and a site for research and investigation of different artistic strategies and content. The students are receiving hands-on guidance as they develop their individual works based on a range of different strategies in terms of content and aesthetics. Programmatic exhibitions and international projects and collaborations are an integral part of the teaching programme.

Eva Dittrich

2018 Diplom an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig bei Joachim Brohm und Peggy Buth. Gründungsmitglied des Künstlerkollektivs und der Galerie KASKL in Berlin; DAAD-Stipendien an der Kuvataideakatemia, Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, sowie an der UMPRUM Academy of Arts in Prag. Diverse Ausstellungen, zuletzt IKNOWIKNOWIKNOW// Group//Bistro21, 2018 in Leipzig.

Florian Merdes

Design-Studium an der Hochschule Mannheim, wo er 2015 seinen Bachelor of Fine Arts erhielt. Er arbeitete als Resident Photographer am Theater Heidelberg und studiert seit 2015 in der Klasse für Fotografie und Medien bei Joachim Brohm. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen, zuletzt »Astoria«, GAPGAP, Leipzig, 2018.

Julius C. Schreiner

Ausbildung zum Mediengestalter in Berlin, am dortigen Lette-Verein lernte er Fotodesign. Seit 2013 an der HGB in Leipzig, seit 2015 in der Klasse von Joachim Brohm. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen, zuletzt »athens coral reef«, und Athens, Athen, 2017.

Mihai Sovaiala

Geboren in Rumänien, Fotografie-Studium an der National University of Arts in Bukarest (BFA), seit 2017 Studium im Rahmen des postgradualen HGB-Meisterschüler-Programms bei Joachim Brohm in Leipzig. Verschiedene Ausstellungen, zuletzt »4m3«, Alert Studio, Bukarest, 2017.

Moritz Zeller

Studium an der Neuen Schule für Fotografie Berlin, danach an der HGB Leipzig, wo er seit 2015 in der Klasse für Fotografie und Medien bei Joachim Brohm studiert. Diverse Ausstellungen und Publikationen, zuletzt im Rahmen von »itsabook« (independent publishing fair), Leipziger Buchmesse, 2018.

Nea Gumprecht

Studium an der Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin, danach ein dreijähriger Auslandsaufenthalt in Italien. Seit 2013 an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, wo sie seit 2016 in der Klasse für Fotografie und Medien bei Joachim Brohm studiert. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen, zuletzt »Waiting for the Blast«, HGB Leipzig, und Galerie Kontoret, Oslo, 2017.

Sophia Kesting

Studium Visuelle Kommunikation an der HTW in Berlin, danach 2016 Diplom an der HGB Leipzig, 2018 Meisterschülerin bei Joachim Brohm. Sie ist seit 2012 Stipendiatin des Cusanuswerks. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen, zuletzt »Picturing Realities: Constructed, Cropped and Reassembled«, Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art, Düsseldorf, 2018.

The project

The artists Eva Dittrich, Florian Merdes, Julius-C. Schreiner, Mihai Sovaiala, Moritz Zeller, Nea Gumprecht and Sophia Kesting paid their first visit to Innsbruck at the beginning of November 2017. In addition to getting to know their host and the exhibition spaces, their primary goal was to discover the city and find the right angle from which to approach their work.

The concepts and themes were then finalised in Leipzig, and subsequently photographed during three working visits to Innsbruck this spring. The majority of the works for the exhibition was produced in Leipzig due to the excellent facilities offered by the Academy (workshops, laboratories, etc.).

All innovations start at the fringes

New works are created when boundaries are broken, when different abilities interact and intertwine, when people have the chance to try things and make mistakes. New creations often come into being in places away from established centres, which tend to uphold existing views and formulas.

For the photography programme, we are inviting a select group of artists to give their take on our home. As part of the music programme, we will be commissioning musicians from Tyrol and Vorarlberg to compose concert pieces for the Stadtforum that resonate with the photographic works on an artistic level.

Innsbruck meets Leipzig: An exchange between schools and art forms

After making the decision to invite an internationally renowned art school to take part in the first exhibition in the series, it was clear who the school’s regional counterpart would be. The class led by Franz Bauer at Tiroler Landeskonservatorium (TLK) is the training centre for composition in Tyrol.

Christian Gamper

Geboren in Bozen, Kapellmeister-Ausbildung an der Musikschule Meran bei Prof. Hans Obkircher, abgeschlossenes Studium im Konzertfach Dirigieren bei Prof. Edgar Seipenbusch und Tito Ceccherini, Studium im Fach Komposition und Musiktheorie bei Prof. Dr. Martin Lichtfuss sowie Franz Baur. Diverse Uraufführungen, u. a.Auftragskomposition bei den Gustav Mahler Musikwochen in Toblach im Auftrag des Südtiroler Künstlerbundes.

Benedikt Huber

Geboren in München, aufgewachsen im Ammertal. Musikwissenschaftsstudium an der Universität Innsbruck, Studium der Komposition und Musiktheorie in der Klasse Franz Baur am Tiroler Landeskonservatorium, begleitet von zahlreichen Uraufführungen durch WINDKRAFT und das Ensemble KONStellation sowie Preisen, etwa des Tiroler Sängerbundes. Derzeit intensive Beschäftigung mit neuen Spieltechniken, dem Tintinnabuli-Stil und mathematischen Modellen in der Musik.

Elias Praxmarer

Geboren in Hall in Tirol, studiert Instrumentalpädagogik mit den Hauptfächern Klavier und Orgel am Mozarteum Salzburg (Expositur Innsbruck), zudem Komposition und Musiktheorie am TLK in der Klasse Franz Baur. Mehrere Stipendien, u. a. ECHO-Stipendium, Förderpreis der Landesmusikschule Ötztal. 2016 und 2017 wurden ihm für seine Kompositionen »Fantasie für Klavier zum 100. Todestag von Max Reger« und »Phantasmagorie für zwei Orgeln« die Kompositions-Stipendien kraftfeld neue musik (Tirol) und Pauls-Sakral verliehen.

Andreas Trenkwalder

Aufgewachsen in Zirl, studierte er am Mozarteum Salzburg Instrumentalpädagogik (Violine, Viola, Jazz) und am Tiroler Landeskonservatorium Komposition bei Franz Baur sowie Computermusik an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. Er veröffentlichte diverse Arbeiten für Chor, Kammer- und Streichorchester sowie elektroakustische Werke. Andreas Trenkwalder ist Preisträger des Hilde-Zach-Förderstipendiums für Komposition der Stadt Innsbruck 2017.

Manuel Zwerger

In Bozen geboren, Studium der Oboe am Konservatorium Bozen und am Tiroler Landeskonservatorium sowie ebendort Komposition und Musiktheorie bei Franz Baur. Zurzeit studiert er Komposition an der Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. 2017 – 2019 erhielt er das Stipendium der Akademie Musiktheater heute (Deutsche Bank Stiftung). 2018 Träger des Hilde-Zach-Förderstipendiums für Komposition der Stadt Innsbruck.

Walk-through concert

The composers were instructed to compose a piece of chamber music approximately seven minutes in length for two to three instruments. Folkert Uhde, a dramatic adviser for concerts who hails from Germany, will be responsible for designing the concert experiences featuring these five new works. Uhde is a pioneer of new concert formats (Radialsystem arts centre, Berlin; Montforter Zwischentöne, Feldkirch) and developed the production for the evening in collaboration with the composers from Tyrol.

New formats of exchange and reflection

A dialogue will round off the triad of dramatic composition for INN SITU. We will invite people from the spheres of science/research, everyday culture and music to respond to the outsider perspectives presented in the exhibition. The aim of this is to experiment with new ways to exchange viewpoints.

We started with a dialogue-based jam session between three different perspectives on the theme of ‘city’: ethnology, architecture and urban histories. The three speakers Silke Meyer, Christoph W. Bauer and Arno Ritter will each select an image from the exhibition and explain how they perceive the city today. They were musically accompanied by Juliana Haider and Siggi Haider.

The Experts

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Silke Meyer

University Professor Dr. Silke Meyer has been living in Innsbruck for approximately a decade and teaches at the Institute of History and European Ethnology. Her research focuses primarily on national identity, visual culture and photography. For her post-doctoral research, she was awarded the Regional Capital of Innsbruck Award [Preis der Landeshauptstadt Innsbruck] in 2017. She was also presented the Ars Docendi State Prize for her teachings in 2013.

Christoph W. Bauer

Author Christoph W. Bauer has delved deep into the city of Innsbruck in a series of publications, including in the books The Second Outsider [Die zweite Fremde] and In the Alphabet of Houses – a novel about a city [Im Alphabet der Häuser, Roman einer Stadt], both of which were published by Haymon Verlag. He was awarded the Tyrol Regional Prize for Art in 2015.

Arno Ritter

Arno Ritter is the director and programmer for the exhibition space “aut.architektur und tirol” in Innsbruck. He is a recognised expert in urban development issues. During the preliminary stage of the project, he took the exhibition artists on a tour of the city and shed light on its architectural history and future issues.

Siggi Haider (accordion, vocals, percussion)—musical adventurer

The Tyrolean artist has been a firmly established theatre and radio musician in southern regions of the German-speaking world for many years. Various solo activities, including with well-known actors Felix Mitterer and Tobias Moretti, and with the Modern Times Orchestra at the Ruhrtriennale music and arts festival.

Julia Haider (saxophone and vocals, actress)
writes and plays music for the stage. Various collaborations with her father Siggi Haider, e.g. with Felix Mitterer in Kafka’s “Report to an Academy”.
